We're Listening to You

If you have a chance go listen to my latest recorded music at my PureVolume.com musician page, where you can hear more cover songs I do than you’d ever care to. And you can damn well download them as well!

I could be on millions of Japanese mobile phones overnight crooning “Big Bottom Girls” by Spinal Tap into a little digital recorder. This could go viral…look out.

Cover of “Angels” in the stylings of Jessica Simpson

August 5th, 2009 by Damian Paul 3 comments »

Jessica Simpson having a bad fucking day

I’ve had so many people sing this song when I play it. Even MY DAUGHTERS have a version from our part-time family band 106 Degrees (Emma came up with the name, has a story to it…)

So I thought it was time I gave it a vocal try. Mixed results but hey, it was a first cut!

When love pays the rent

July 29th, 2009 by Damian Paul 1 comment »

For all the misguided souls who thought love could transcend their impoverished, hopeless abandon searching for MEANING in their miserable middle class lives.

It ain’t gonna happen so just fucking deal with it. Buy yourself a hooker or an escort and, HEY!, have a good time on your own. You don’t need me! I don’t need you!

“Personally selected” below are songs that are both a lot like the statement above while also nothing at all like the statement above. See if you can guess them all!

From the upcoming Damian Paul & Friendzy release, When Love Pays Rent, a sort-of tribute album to Charles Bukowski. With an original thrown in due to wild abandon…

As always, I welcome your comments and constructive criticism. Just don’t tell me I suck, please don’t tell me I suck.

Thank you.

Straight from the OC: Songs from Sand In Your Eye

June 28th, 2009 by Damian Paul 4 comments »

From the forthcoming album Sand In Your Eye, a preview of the collaborative efforts of unheralded and mostly ignored singer/songwriter/guitarist Damian Paul singing with the mysterious and sinister A.K.A.

Some of these songs were recorded with the Atlantic Ocean’s white-foamed crashing waves in the background. That’s just flat out fab.

Check out the songs and drop us a comment!

Leonard Cohen, Brit Pop, and a little Shakespeare

Leonard Cohen 1969

Leonard Cohen 1969

I’ve been listening to Leonard Cohen a lot lately and his music makes me want to write songs. Cohen is an amazing songwriter and his music is often mesmerizing.

So (no segue) since I don’t know yet what exactly I’m going to do with this site, I thought posting more of the covers I’m working on would be OK.

I mean, I need content.

Nothing of this is instructional yet…maybe the opposite.

Below is my humble version of a great song that got overplayed but still resonates with me. I had to play this one in a different key ’cause there’s no way I am hitting Chris Martin’s high notes…maybe on SingStar.

This next tune is one of my all-time favorite songs, originally recorded by Dire Straits. One of the Indigo Girls, I think Amy Ray, does a wicked version of this tune. It’s a timeless story, and I’m just naturally drawn to love and death.

The Medication’s Wearing Off

January 28th, 2009 by Damian Paul No comments »

Some new cover songs from The Medication’s Wearing Off sessions, nothing original yet (although I have some recorded already).

A good friend put in a request for “No Surprises” by Radiohead, but I still need to practice it a bit. But I gave it a go, wish I had a good Brit accent to draw upon…

So I guess this means I take requests. If I can play it, I’ll record it.

That makes me sound like a guitar whore. Oh well.

Send me all your glorious requests (include artist as well).

My first guitar - a Black and White Fender Squire Bullet

It all started with a black & white Fender Squire Bullet

My first guitar - a Black and White Fender Squire Bullet

Yep, that was my first guitar. Never could play it a lick, although I once learned some Iron Maiden tabs at the lessons I took from a guy who was obviously Gino Vannelli’s twin brother.

Later I’d own another fender, this time an acoustic beauty, that one day would have an unsightly hole put into it by a raging ex-wife.

The guitar still sounds good, and I don’t here much shouting these days. Life goes easy on me, most of the time. That’s a Damien Rice lyric, sorry.
